Description

“IV Therapy Certification” for Medical Assistants

Medical assistants and dental assistants are unlicensed assistive personnel ( UAP). UAccording to infusion therapy standards of practice, medical assistants may perform IV therapy tasks as delegated by a physician  except, in those states where it is specifically prohibited.

However, documented education, training and competency validations are required prior to delegating IV therapy tasks to unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP).

PLEASE NOTE: Regulations for unlicensed assistive personnel performing IV therapy procedures vary state by state. Please be aware of your medical and dental board regulations for delegation of IV therapy procedures.

This 1-day hands-on training program is developed according to the  infusion therapy standards of practice and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines to prevent catheter related blood stream infection. This IV therapy class will prepare UAPs to prepare, initiate, monitor and discontinue peripheral IV fluids as delegated by a physician, licensed independent practitioner or a qualified professional.

Certificate of completion and a competency assessment form are provided for attendees who successfully complete the program. Competency assessment should be provided by the attendee’s facility, according to the facility’s policy and procedures.

According to the infusion therapy standards of practice, no tasks related to vascular access device insertion, care, maintenance and administration of any type of IV fluids shall be delegated to nursing assistive personnel (NAP). We discourage nursing assistants and personnel with no formal clincal training performing IV therapy procedures.
