About IV Therapy by Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP)

State Medical Boards regulate delegation of IV therapy tasks from physicians to medical assistants (MAs) and other unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP). Regulations vary greatly among states, and very few identify any form of scope of practice for IV therapy by MAs and UAPs.

Depending on the state regulation, physicians and other licensed independent practitioners (LIPs) may delegate infusion related tasks to UAPs. Though, prior to delegation, the delegating professional must confirm the UAP has successfully completed an IV therapy training program (sometimes referred as IV certification program) and is competent to perform delegated tasks. Ongoing supervision and accountability are essential parts of the delegation.

This comprehensive infusion therapy education and hand-on IV therapy training program is prepared for registered nurses with little or no experience in peripheral or central vascular infusion therapy and those who wish to advance their career in IV infusion therapy nurse. PICC insertion training programs that qualify clinicians to insert PICC line are often implied as PICC line insertion certification.

2-day classroom training for PICC insertion qualification consists of didactic,  one-on-one supervised practice session and testing. It is developed according to globally recognized infusion therapy standards of practice by the Infusion Nurses Society / INS. This unique comprehensive, small group, hands-on training teaches to insert PICC line and midline catheters with modified Seldinger technique (MST).

This 2-day training includes basics of ultrasound use. If the student already feels comfortable with using an ultrasound to locate vessels, the 1-day PICC/midline training can also be an option.

Upon successful completion of the 2-day PICC line insertion training, attendees obtain a certificate of completion. Attendees may commence supervised insertion and competency validation in any clinical settings according to the facility’s policy and procedures.

Prerequisites:

• Attendees require knowledge of fundamentals of infusion therapy, peripheral catheter insertion skills and be proficient in use, care and maintenance of PICC line and midline catheters. (If you do not have knowledge and experience in IV infusion therapy, we recommend to take 20-hr IV Therapy Course for RNs prior to PICC line insertion training.
