About IV Therapy Course for RNs
This comprehensive infusion therapy education and hand-on IV therapy training program is prepared for registered nurses with little or no experience in peripheral or central vascular infusion therapy and those who wish to advance their career in IV infusion therapy nurse. This IV therapy course prepare clinicians to manage patients receiving complex intravenous therapies in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, patients’ homes and other clinical settings.
Upon completion of this 20-hour IV infusion therapy course, attendees gain knowledge and skills to:
- Insert short peripheral IV catheters with minimal attempts
- Clinical guidelines and nursing management of diverse infusion therapies
- Use and manage peripheral catheters, midlines, PICC and all types of vascular access devices
- Access, de-access and manage implanted vascular access port (Port-a-Cath)
- De-clot PICC and other central vascular access devices (CVADs) with Cathflo Activase (alteplase)
- Remove midline, PICC and non-tunneled CVCs
- Documentation Guidelines

Who Should Attend?
- RNs with little or no experience in IV intravenous therapy
- Post graduates nurses before or after the NCLX examination
- LPNs, if their Nurse Practice Act allows to infuse through a central vascular catheter
Please Note:
Nurse practice act (NPA) is the law that delineates the legal scope of practice of nurses. Nurse practice acts vary state by state. RNs, LPNs and LVNs must comply with the rules and regulations of the board of nursing.
Some states have specific guidelines for IV infusion therapy education and competency validation referred as IV Therapy Certification for LPNs. Most jurisdictions allow LPNs to insert and infuse through short peripheral catheters, but not through a central vascular catheter.
